This paper discusses energy methods for determining the indicator fuel consumption in different conditions. The calculated and experimental graph of the fuel consumption of the vehicle is presented. The scheme of fuel-energy balance of the car is considered. An algorithm for calculating partial efficiency by simple mathematical models is considered. The calculated data for three categories of roads are given. An algorithm for computational and analytical diagnostics of vehicle units is considered. On the basis of the proposed technique, it is possible to create a fundamentally new and more perfect technique for diagnosing cars. A new method for diagnosing the technical condition of vehicle units by changing the indicator fuel consumption is described. Calculations were made and a graph of changes in fuel consumption in individual units was built. The general "Driver-Machine-Road-Fuel-Atmosphere" system is analyzed. The theoretical studies performed give grounds to recommend the introduction of special diagnostic cards for specific vehicles in road transport. The results of the study can be used in the process of assessing the performance of the vehicle.
