The increasingly stringent emission standards are increasing the demand for alternative fuels to replace fossil fuels and meet the new standards. Ethanol is one of the alternative fuels derived from biomass, with the potential to meet current requirements and reduce greenhouse gases. High octane performance characteristics of ethanol in combination with a direct injection gasoline engine allow improving the power and environmental performance of the engine. The purpose of this study is to model a gasoline engine with direct injection in order to study the impact of ethanol additives on engine performances and emissions. The study compares the performance and environmental characteristics of the engine, changing the compression ratio. The results show that the maximum torque obtained at E100 being about 8% higher from than at E0. The maximum volumetric efficiency 1v obtained at El00 being about 3,9% higher from than at E0. The difference is clearly noticeable after engine speeds above 2800 min−1. The E100 has higher NOx emissions compared to E0. The difference is clearly noticeable below 2800 min−1. The CO emission for E100 was lower than that of E0. The E100 has higher NOx emissions compared to E0. The difference is clearly noticeable below 2800 min−1.
