For microwaves it is well established that through structuring of a metal slab along the direction of wave propagation wave guiding can be achieved. The aim of this paper is to try and transfer that knowledge into the optical domain, examining the effect that ribbed periodic structuring has on plasmonic wave guiding. Where not only attenuation but also field location and reach are considered.
