Nb-O solid solution single crystals have been grown using electron beam zone melting method from Nb-NbO mixture rods prepared via two distinctive approaches. The retention of oxygen in the single crystals and growth characteristics have been studied using micro-hardness measurement, chemical analysis and Laue x-ray back reflection. The results indicate that Nb-O single crystals can be grown using electron beam zone melting and the oxygen concentration in the single crystals can be controlled via adjusting the moving speed of molten zone and the oxygen level in the starting material.
