The paper presents a comparative analysis of the structure and microhardness of the thread obtained by a thread mill and a tap in three different materials: aluminum alloy D16, structural steel 45, and alloy steel 12X18H9. Investigations of the profile shape and structure of the thread were carried out by visual comparison of the performed thin sections. The microhardness of the material in different parts of the threaded profile, the degree and depth of work hardening were considered as quantitative indicators. The statistical analysis of the measurement results was carried out and the tendencies of changes in the indicated parameters were determined. The work can be useful to technologists of metalworking enterprises to evaluate the use of the thread processing method depending on the requirements for the thread.
