The article considers innovation in environmental education and developing ecological competencies of students and railway specialists in Omsk State Transport University (OSTU). The article gives an appraisal of international educational environmental projects by the example of the RECOAUD TEMPUS IV project. Some sectors of environmentally sensitive scientific research and technological developments of leading scientists and scholar schools in OSTU are introduced. The article gives the information about the project “Student Environmental meetings”, which was nominated for the national environmental award “Crystal Compass”. The results of the questionnaire survey of students on the volunteer movement are analyzed in the article. Innovative methodical and educational instruments help to solve the problems of ensuring the environmental safety of railway transport, to implement national objectives and strategic challenges of developing the Russian Federation in the field of education.
