The characterization of infrared terrestrial and earth limb backgrounds was a primary objective of MSX (the Midcourse Space Experiment), a BMDO (Ballistic Missile Defense Organization) program to support the requirements for the design and operation of proposed and conceptual infrared surveillance systems. The cryogenic phase of the MSX mission, April 24, 1996 to February 25, 1997, has provided definitive and unique measurements of infrared terrestrial and earth limb backgrounds. The mission provided precise radiometric measures at high spatial resolution in two MWIR (mid wavelength infrared) and four LWIR (long wavelength infrared) bands and characterized the mean radiance and spatial structure in 233 data collection events, nominally 20 to 30 minutes in duration, representing a wide range of terrestrial and limb phenomena. In this paper we present several examples of terrestrial and limb backgrounds for the two MWIR bands with full width half maximum band widths of 4.22–4.36 and 4.24–4.45 μm.
