The paper indicates at the important role of internal casting defects in decreasing fatigue resistance of bearing parts of freight bogies with cast structures. Types and area of casting defects, revealed in field tests of bearing side frames of bogies, are given. Using the original center-notched sample by size of the internal defect in the part, conservation of the known method of detecting permissible size of internal defects in responsible car bogie casts is rationalized, on samples with the edge crack at eccentric tension. The correction factor into Irwin formula for calculating the stress intensity factor in the vicinity of the apex defect is introduced, allowing to increase the area of internal defects in bogie cast parts from standard 7.1 mm2 to the new value 9.5 mm2. Theoretical results obtained correspond to the empirical observations
