In The Art of Flight, John Watkinson chronicles the disciplines and major technologies that allow heavier-than-air machines to take flight. He explains how airplanes actually fly via a qualitative understanding of the underlying process, rather than a heavy reliance on mathematics. After providing historical and technical background the author in turn examines aerodynamics, the power plant, flight information, control, performance, surface effect, and more. Readers are guided on a fascinating journey through the concepts and systems that make flight possible. The Art of Flight will appeal to the technically-minded reader who seeks a reflective, thoughtful introduction to the concepts that allow flight. ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Watkinson is a polymath, author, educator, pilot, expert witness, and consultant. He graduated in electronic engineering and holds a master’s degree in sound and vibration, he is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society and a Chartered Information Systems Practitioner. He is the author of more than twenty-five technical books, many of which have won awards. The quiet revolution that is digital technology has transformed many of his fields of interest, beginning with audio, then television, cinema, and aviation. Each time he has been there to explain the transformation. He takes the view that if no attempt has been made to explain a topic to others, then it has not necessarily been understood. Lecturing and writing therefore form an essential part of his own learning process. Living in a carbon-neutral house in rural England, he restores antique clocks and classic Jaguars.
