Description When the first U.S. satellite was launched in January 1958, there were many skeptics as to the practical value of the space program. On April 1, 1960, in a little over two years, the world's first Earth observation satellite-TIROS-was successfully orbited, demonstrating for the first time the potential of remote sensing from space to provide direct benefits to mankind.
