In everyday life, a camera is some piece of hardware whose function is to take pictures. Cameras come in all shapes and sizes, from the miniature ones in cell phones to the expensive equipment used by professional photographers. This chapter presents primarily geometric optics, that is, the locations of images in the focal plane of a camera. The gnomon of a sundial is the slanted edge—and, by extension, the supporting structure as well—that rises above the dial itself. The charge‐coupled device, universally known as a CCD, has been the workhorse detector for both space‐based and ground‐based astronomical cameras since its invention around 1970. An “Active Pixel Sensor” is similar to of a CCD in that it is a silicon‐based detector with a gate structure, but the readout technique is quite different.
