Towed camera systems are used extensively in deep‐sea research to acquire photographic samples of the seabed. They are deployed on a cable from a surface vessel, have no internal propulsion, can carry video or still image cameras, and can either be self‐contained, recording images to be downloaded on return to the surface, or can transmit data to the surface in real time via a fibre optic cable. In this chapter we describe the principal components of deep‐sea towed camera systems in use today, and how these components are configured to achieve optimum image quality. We then review approaches to survey planning and practical considerations for towed camera deployments in the deep sea, and conclude with considerations of photographic sample management and analysis.
