This chapter addresses upcoming technological challenges in vehicular networks that are likely to demand more than an evolutionary improvement. It focuses on topics related to the evolution, integration and convergence of vehicular communications involving, for example, cognitive methods. The chapter provides an overview of future challenges in the field. The motivation for applying new paradigms to address these challenges is presented, by focusing on specific upcoming topics in Vehicular Communication (VC). Vehicular networks are now emerging from a role as coexisting dedicated‐purpose networks, towards becoming a part of the future Internet. Recent developments evolving from the military domain use of Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Cognitive Radio (CR) have opened the way towards achieving increased robustness and resilience by providing a kind of redundancy on the wireless link supporting spectrum handover through Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA). The evolution of vehicular networks fostered a new perspective on communication‐based collaboration between vehicles.
