This chapter examines some aspects of system integration and offers the reader some of the potential down sides to encourage a level of caution and scrutiny of the design to ensure safe solutions. The term system integration can be interpreted in a number of ways, and the following interpretations are commonly used in the aircraft industry: integration at the component level; integration at the system level; integration at the process level; integration at the functional level; integration at the information level; integration at the prime contract level; and integration from emergent properties. An explanation with examples will provide an understanding of each of these instances of integration. The chapter also describes one example of an emergent property to illustrate how the sub‐systems of the aircraft become effectively ‘integrated’ by interactions that may not have been envisaged in the initial design.
