The drivelines and suspensions of wheeled off‐road vehicles are much more varied than those of tracked vehicles. The basic drivelines are generally classified as being of the H‐drive or I‐drive type. H‐drives have been mainly used on a previous generation of armoured wheeled vehicles. H‐drives have been quite widely used on UK and French armoured vehicles because they allow increased internal hull volume combined with a low vehicle profile. I‐drives are now used almost universally for both logistic and armoured vehicles with ‘off‐the shelf’ components employed as much as possible. Various designs are described in this chapter, broadly classified as unarmoured and armoured vehicles. Unarmoured vehicles include logistic, military, earth‐moving and recreational sports vehicles. Suspensions can be connected in roll, pitch and warp (differential roll). Interconnection can be by mechanical linkage, hydraulics (and sometimes a combination of the two) or, with active suspensions, in software.
