The first case study is concerned with the analysis and design of semi-active suspension systems. Motivation for an 'active control' solution is provided by considering the inherent performance limitations of passive systems. Simulation models based on linear power spectral density functions of typical random road profiles are described and compared to measured data. This excitation simulation exercise is intended to quantify the source and form of the disturbance signals that must be isolated, and therefore represents an important first step in controller design. An advanced hydropneumatic semi-active suspension development system is described. A simplified (linear) dynamical model of the system (derived using Bond Graph techniques) is also presented. Development of control algorithms to effect fast-levelling performance and reduce uncomfortable body motion is described with reference to the well known root locus technique. The second case study is concerned with the development of methods for actively damping automotive driveline resonances (Shunt control) using ignition-based algorithms. The work described involves the development of control laws based on a linear dynamical description of driveline dynamics - once more derived using Bond Graph techniques. A series of open and closed loop simulations in both the time and frequency domains are used to characterise the Shunt control problem and develop effective closed loop solutions. Some experimental results are presented.
