Trains are constrained to travel along on a single track, and cannot pass except where there are sidings, which results in a system with a single degree of freedom. Today methods for the control of trains range from verbal authorities to wayside signal indications relayed directly to locomotive cabs, and automatic train stop systems. The traditional means of controlling train operations is through the use of verbal authorities and mandatory directives. The main types of train control system technology that are available to reduce the impact of a failure of the train crew to comply with authorizations are Automatic Train Stop (ATS) and Automatic Train Control (ATC). Positive Train Control (PTC) systems are wireless communication Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems that provide high precision train position information independent of track circuits. PTC has a number of security threats that have potentially significant consequences for public health and safety.
