A general review of experiences from the use of stainless steel of type 6Mo offshore on the Norwegian continental shelf is given. The review covers manufacturing aspects and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel type 6Mo has now been in use for more than 10 years on offshore platforms. The performance of the material for sea water service has been below expections when the material was first taken into use. The main limitation is crevice corrosion in mechanical joints, especially threaded connections. Usage limits have been defined, but are still subject to discussion between contractors/suppliers and users. There exists thorough documentation from laboratory testing and field experience, and it should now be possible to develop improved and commonly agreed usage limits. There is a need to establish reliable, reproducible and commonly accepted standard tests for qualification of stainless steel and nickel alloys in sea water.
