An analysis of failure of a Type 316L SS (stainless steel) (UNS S31603) piping system at an offshore platform was performed to identify the possible causes for the failures. Common construction practices leave the piping system without proper inside cleaning before and after hydrotesting, leading to the formation of corrosion cells. These corrosion cells lead to the breakdown of the very crucial protective passive film layer and any negligence in maintaining this protective film lead to corrosion. The hydrotest water may also have corrosion-enhancing bacteria such as SBR (sulfate-reducing bacteria) or iron bacteria, which can accelerate and enhance MIC (microbiologically influenced corrosion). Incomplete welds, ragged edges along the weld, irregular root bead shape, and accumulated debris near the weld can also initiate electrochemical activity that lead to corrosion of the weld root.
