In the Japanese automobile industry, the introduction of newly developed or modified existing materials is intended to meet present requirements for weight saving, higher quality, higher performance and originality. Cost vs. performance is the major criterion in automotive materials adaptability, and the most important factors by which candidate materials are judged include the following: 1) Lighter weight, 2) Composite application (combining technologies), 3) Increased value added by surface modification, 4) Adaptibility to small quantities, but applicability to many types of production systems, 5) Adaptibility to domestic or foreign production, 6) Compatibility with environmental regulations and recycling systems. Trend in the Japanese automotive industry's steel products usage is discussed, with particular regard to structural steels and sintered alloys. This article is translated in Russian too.
