A material replacement program was initiated at a service water system in the Delaware River after observing localized crevice corrosion on the flange-face areas of the 316L stainless steel flanges. Galvanic effects, caused by the mixed alloy construction, may be accelerating the observed crevice corrosion of type 316L SS. To address this problem, the original 316L SS and cement-lined carbon steel were replaced with 6% molybdenum alloy AL-6XN.
