Effects of gasket materials on the crevice corrosion resistance of stainless steel (SS) flanges were investigated in natural seawater and related chloride-containing waters. Results for tests comprising cast CF-3M (UNS J92800) and wrought type 316 (S31600) SS flanges having grooved and smooth finishes are discussed. Overall, natural and synthetic elastomer-type gaskets were less likely to promote crevice corrosion than polytetrafluoroethylene gaskets and other gaskets containing fibers. While carbon and graphite-containing gaskets promoted crevice corrosion, other gaskets promoted even greater attack.
