Ausbay quenching has the potential for reducing quench distortion during hardening and providing an alternative to expensive hot straightening. The use of vacuum furnaces for ausbay quenching is made possible by microprocessor-based furnace controls and special equipment design features. By combining gas and oil quenching processes, high-strength steels can be heat treated to achieve full mechanical properties while minimizing quench distortion. It reduces heat treating costs by avoiding labor and tooling expenses associated with hot straightening. Switching to vacuum heat treatment from a traditional salt bath process can provide additional cost savings by eliminating the need to address several environmental concerns.
