The transmission of structure-borne tire/road noise through the rear wheelhouse of a mid-size passenger car is investigated. The vibro-acoustic energy flow paths in the vehicle are represented in a detailed statistical energy analysis (SEA) model. The SEA model was validated by comparing its predictions with the results coming from power injection and conductance tests performed on a surrogate production vehicle. The validated SEA model is utilized to conduct a noise path analysis. Design alternatives were evaluated to improve the sound package on the rear shelf and the trunk floor panels. Implementation of a damping treatment together with a decoupled barrier on the package tray panel helped to improved the interior noise level.
