Described is a Crash Avoidance System (CAS) effectiveness modeling framework that may complement kinematic, dynamical, and epidemiological methods for estimating CAS effectiveness. A model to develop effectiveness estimates for a lane change CAS to support driver lane change decisions, is proposed. The model is based on concepts from reliability theory. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the impact of various model parameters and assumptions to gain insight into possible future effectiveness as these parameters vary.
