Wärtsilä NSD Corporation has announced the development of a new lowspeed two-stroke marine diesel engine, the Sulzer RTA60C, for faster types of ships requiring power outputs up to 18880 kW. With cylinder dimensions of 600 mm bore by 2250 mm stroke, the RTA60C has a maximum continuous output of 2360 kW/cylinder at 114 rev/min. It is available with give to eight cylinders covering an overall power range of 8250-18880 kW at 91-114 rev/min. It thus offers the right powers and speeds for a wide range of faster ships such as medium-sized container ships (typically 1200-2700 TEU), car carriers, ro-ro vessels, reefers etc. Wärtsilä NSD Corporation has reported that orders for the Sulzer RTA96C, one of the most powerful diesel engines in service, have passed the two million horsepower mark. They are all for fast post-Panamax containerships of 5,000 TEU or larger in capacity which are building in Japan, Korea and Germany. The engines in service and on order now comprise: (1) eight 12RTA96C for P&O Nedlloyd, (2) two 11RTA96C for NYK Line, (3) five 10RTA96C for Conti-Reederei, (4) two 10RTA96C for Hanjin Shipping, (5) five 10RTA96C for P&O Nedlloyd and (6) five 10RTA96C for Yangming Marine. Total: 27 engines with 2151360 bhp (1581882 kW).
