Disc brake assembly in automobile often causes unpleasant noise and vibration. Noise and vibration are often perceived during operating brake pedal. It is said to be, so called, brake chattering which occurs by contact between pad (friction material) and disc. Brake chattering can be classified into two kinds. One is independent of automotive parts and the other one is correlated to the parts. The independent one generally has frequencies exceeding 1000 Hz called 'squeal' or below 10 Hz of 'judder' noise. The dependent 'humming noise' lies between 10 Hz and 1000 Hz. Engineers in many industries need to have basic parametric information for this kind of phenomenon. However, since simulation of the disc brake chattering includes thermo-elastic coupling as well as mechanical contact between disc and pads surfaces, the conventional finite element method fails to simulate the problem within reasonable time. Since vehicles themselves influence the dependent noise, careful inspection of assemblies connecting to the brake system may solve NVH problems. Squeal and juddering, however, are traditional brake NVH problems and usually require well conducted research studies. Though these kinds of NVH troubles have been enormously reported in trains and airplanes, recently automotive industries have paid great attentions on brake NVH due to use of non-asbestos friction materials. In this paper, we simulate the thermo-elastic problem in the disc brake system using the finite element method combined with Fast Fourier Transform technique. The simulation time using the developed in-house program is considerably reduced at compared by using several commercial packages. The simple cases are bench-marked by comparing well known packages. As a result, some important parametric studies on the brake chattering are obtained.
