The paper outlines the environmental issue associated with the emission of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) during offshore loading of shuttle tankers, and describes the solution: the 'VOC Fuel' system which reduces the VOC emission by collecting and storing the VOC and utilising it as fuel for the main engine(s). This makes the engine's exhaust gas significantly cleaner, and substantially reduces the vessel's fuel bill. The expected results are a 50 % to 90 % reduction of SO(x) emissions (proportional to the substitution of heavy fuel oil), a similar reduction in particulate emissions (due to the more volatile fuel), and a 20 % to 30 % reduction in NO(x) emissions (due to more uniform mixing of air and fuel during the combustion process in the cylinders). The paper presents results of combustion tests with VOC/fuel oil on a 10000 bhp research engine, equipped with a mechatronic VOC fuel injection system. These tests serve to identify the demands made on engine and fuel injection system control when using VOC as the main fuel. As the next step, a full-scale demonstration of the technology and concept for shuttle tankers will be carried out on one of Statoil's shuttle tankers, serving the Norwegian Statfjord oilfield. Finally, the economical aspects of using the VOC fuel concept for new shuttle tankers is dealt with on the basis of a Net Present Value study. (Contributions and author's replies in Vol. 7, p 1828).
