Whereas the development of personal cars successfully makes use of simulation methods, for terrain vehicle mobility, so far, only the individual phenomena were considered by theory or in simulation, but a total vehicle-terrain-system simulation including all the relevant interactions on a physical analytical base, had been missed. In order to close this gap, in 1990 the IKK had started the research program ORIS, to develop a sophisticated computer program for Off Road Interactive Simulation. ORIS simulates the vehicle with all its relevant functions, operating in a digital three-dimensional terrain, following up to the handling inputs of the operator (driver). The program is based on detailed description of the drive-line functions, the wheel-soil interactions (such as sinkage, slip, rolling resistance, circumferential force, slip-sinkage, multipass), the individual wheel-loads depending on vehicle accelerations and on inclination and twisting of the terrain surface, the speed of the vehicle resulting from the equation of motion, the driving direction influenced by steering. The actual position in the terrain and the vehicle motion can be observed on the monitor. As all the relevant vehicle-design and layout data are implicated in the equations, by variation of these parameters, an optimization of the vehicle can be achieved. Testing the vehicle on the computer, taking place in an environment similar to reality, involves the possibility of measurement of about 150 different operational data, which can be picked up from different locations in the computation program. This means, that the expensive measurements on real test-vehicles can be replaced to an essential portion by the ORIS computation. As ORIS is designed in a modular structure, it is easy to exchange the modules for vehicle components or to change the terrain. As the cost for workstation computers has become moderate, ORIS is a very cost-effective tool for terrain vehicle development.
