This paper describes the manoeuvring aspects of the development of some new double-ended ferries with extreme L/B and B/T ratios. Three different Scandline ferry projects are considered. All of these ferries had problems with course keeping ability and the different measures taken to overcome the negative effect of this are described, in an attempt to establish some guide-lines for the achievement of adequate course keeping ability for double-ended ferries with extreme L/B and B/T ratios. It is shown that even with extreme hull parameters, (L/B: 4 - 5 and B/T: 4,0 - 5,5) it is possible to overcome course keeping problems by selecting a suitable hull form in combination with a proper number, size and location of stabilising fins. Propeller configuration also has an influence on course keeping ability. Service experience and trial results for some of the ferries are presented.
