A control system for the intake flow in 4-stroke engines has been developed. It has been named Variable Intake Port (VIP) system. Such a system has proven to be an effective strategy to achieve fast lean burning at partial load and an increase of the volumetric efficiency when the throttle was wide open. Test results showed that the maximum power of the VIP engine could be increased by more than 9 % in comparison with the original engine. Under the ECE-40 test mode, this VIP motorcycle, without catalyst and secondary air system, improved by at least 16 % its fuel consumption. HC+NOX emissions were reduced from 1.07 g/km to 1.00 g/km, and CO-emissions from 3.69 g/km to 0.75 g/km. Not only the combustion variations under partial load were improved, but also the maximum vehicle speed and acceleration were superior to the original motorcycle.
