This article describes the development of engineering and technology of producing oil offshore. The newest designs are floating production systemsconsisting of a floating vessel with production facilities which receive oil and gas from subsea wells through flowlines known as risers. The vessel is either a purpose-built ship or a converted tanker or else a semi-submersible - a mobile unit with a superstructure supported by columns which rest on lower hulls below the surface of the water. There are around 50 floating systems worldwide. Many of this are offshore Brazil where the deep water discoveries of oil and gas provide further opportunities for these systems
