Rapid Prototyping or Solid Freeform Fabrication (SSF) is an emerging fabrication process for production of physical objects directly from CAD models. It has been increasingly used in automotive industries for rapid fabrication of prototypes to verify new or modified designs. Computer modelling and interfaces have not become issues until recent years when research on the SSF of multiple material components and high precision functional prototypes has been initiated. This paper will summarize a number of these issues and the research directions on these issues will be also discussed.
