(1) A simple semi-active suspension control system to realize the skyhook principle is proposed. This system consists of 4 smart actuators which control the damping force for each wheel independently. (2) The required driving current of the actuator is reduced by optimum design of the parameters. This is made possible by numerical formulation of a dynamical model of the stepping motor and extracting the principle factors which determine the generating torque. (3) The performance of the new system is evaluated for different types of vehicles. By tuning the control parameters, ride comfort and roll behavior are improved according to the different performance criteria of these types of vehicles.
