This paper presents a method for predicting capsize risk of a ship in waves and wind. The technique offers a rational basis for designing a ship against capsize, and can be applied to novel ship designs. A time domain ship motion code is used to predict a matrix of conditions under which capsize will occur for a given ship. Based on this capsize matrix and input statistical data, the probability of ship capsize in any operational area is then evaluated. The capsize risk prediction procedure models wind conditions as a function of wave conditions. Computations for an example naval frigate show that failure to include wind forces can significantly influence predicted capsize risk.
