Electro Energy, Inc. is developing a unique patented bipolar Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable battery based upon the use of stackable wafer cells. The key to viable bipolar battery operation has been the use of this modular approach. The unit wafer-cell construct exploits the chemical, thermal, and electrical properties of a proprietary thin plastic conductive film. Current flows across the cell interfaces, perpendicular to the electrode plane. A new generation plastic-bonded electrode that can be fabricated by simple process has been developed for both the positive and negative electrodes that offers exceptionally high specific capacity. This versatile design approach is expected to enable low-cost high volume manufacture by virtue of the design simplicity and use of low-cost plastic-bonded electrodes. Results of laboratory cells containing electrodes up to 6' square are shown, including sealed-cell cycle life over 1200 cycles, high rate discharge, dynamic stress testing, and high utilization.
