Among the lithium batteries, the lithium carbon liquid electrolyte technology is the most promising for the mid-term: around the year 2000 for the serial production stage. After several years of basic research, SAFT is developing a complete electric vehicle battery system, including thermal management and electronic control system of the battery. Scale one electrochemical cells in the range of 100 Ampere-hours have been built and tested. They show performances over 100 Wh/kg and 200 Wh/l at the beginning of life. The work presented performances at cell level: specific energy, specific power, cycle life. They consists in calculations for the Thermal Management System design, presentation and test results on the Electronic Control System (charge/ discharge management, state of charge measurement). This presentation also give objectives and predictions for full size complete Electric Vehicle Battery System prototypes which will be integrated on board vehicles early 1997. The vehicle autonomy will be over 200 kilometres. At last, the industrial aspects are approached: targeted serial cost of 150 ECU per kWh, production processes, industialrisation and production schedules.
