A study into the marine contribution to atmospheric pollution by Lloyd's Register has been undertaken as a phased research programme. These phases have examined the gaseous and particulate emissions from ship in service as well as considering the particular environmental pollution caused in port locations and sea areas as diverse as the English Channel and North Atlantic. The paper summaries the principal findings of this work both from the points of view of the ship as a contributor to atmospheric pollution, the magnitude of the pollution and the land based communities as recipients of this pollution.
