Liquified natural gas (LNG) carriers are unique because in their operation they use their natural cargo wastage as fuel for propulsion. Since matching of the boil-off gas (BOG) and propulsion power production is required, steam turbine plants have been installed for almost all LNG carriers up to now to satisfy these requirements, despite their low thermal efficiency. Some alternatives have been proposed and available. However, evaluation of these alternatives should include not only economics, but careful consideration should also be given to such aspects as safety and reliability, maintainability, operability as well as environmental impact. The paper discusses evaluations of alternatives such as steam turbine with contra-rotating propeller (CRP), dual fuel diesel (DFD), diesel with reliquefaction (DRL), etc. from various points of view, taking into consideration both technological and commercial circumstances, and proposes a procedure to select optimum plants for future LNG carriers.
