Present status for average ships in Great Lakes bulk carrying fleet, problems of economic replacement, and requirements for main propulsion and auxiliary machinery are delineated; paper describes gas-turbine machinery plant and compares it to steam plant used in recent construction; operating and environmental conditions existing on Great Lakes are presented as influencing factors in final selection; there is existing need to replace obsolete vessels, and gas-turbine plant will be lower in initial and operating costs when compared with steam plant.
