The elastic-perfectly plastic traction model described gives an accurate prediction of variator loses. Projected variator efficiency at typical normal operating conditions is in the region of 93 %. Cooling jets aimed directly at the running track of a variator roller seems to be very effective. Cooling jet performance characteristics are constructed of three distinct regions, only one of which can be modelled adequately using the traditional dimensionless groups of Reynolds number, Nusselt number and Prandtl number. Although the overall pattern is not fully understood as yet, it is repeatable and therefore provides some basis for design. Substantional improvements in the cooling of full toroidal variators are possible, permitting the use of smaller transmissions in higher power applications.
