Structure-borne sound transmission is of dominant importance for machinery originated shipboard noise. As a successful means to reduce this transmission for diesel engines of 600 rpm and higher the resilient mounting system is nowadays widely accepted for ships. In a number of cases also for medium-speed diesel engines (350 rpm to 600 rpm) resilient mounting systems have been succesfully designed and applied, although application on a wide scale is only slowly penetrating in the ship design world. The design is discussed and a method for testing the principal properties is described. Systems in service now for many years have proven their reliability. As for acoustic considerations the resiliently mounted medium-speed diesel engine is fully competitive with or can be even better than the rigidly mounted lowspeed engine. Good acoustic properties of a mounting system require careful consideration of all noise transmission paths, viz via mountings, flexible shaft coupling, flexible pipe connections and airborne sound.
