Discussion of results of study made at Yarrow-Admiralty Research Dept, assessing potential economic and technical advantages of medium-speed diesel engines for propulsion of oceangoing merchant ships, as compared with use of slow-speed direct-drive diesel engines; discussion is related in particular to Ruston and Hornsby AO engine and Mirrlees National opposed-piston engine; however, comparisons are provided also with other medium-speed engines available now, including four-stroke Mirrlees National K Major and S. E.M.T.Pielstick PC2. (see also Motor Ship v 47 n 558 Jan 1967 p 466-72)
