The paper discusses key marine gas turbine facets and the application of this propulsion system in currently committed installations. Advantages of the gas turbine are numerous and include: 1. Simplicity, 2. Small volume, 3. Low weight, 4. Easily automated, 5. Fast starting, 6. Low maintenance. Since the heavy duty gas turbine is a relatively new contender in the marine propulsion business, these advantages must be coached in terms which show clear, tangible economic benefits to be gained by either shipbuilders or owners or both. For instance, the heavy duty gas turbine's simplicity, low volume, and low weight imply a flexibility which is of advantage to owners in that the gas turbine need not be mounted blow decks in a conventional manner. This flexibility has been used very effectively Union Steamship of New Zealand installations. This has resulted in an increase in cubic capacity of the vessels for Union Steamship amounting to about 12%. Obviously this translates directly into greater cargo carrying capacity per voyage. These same advantages can also be translated into advantages of direct benefit to the shipbuilder. The heavy duty gas turbine is an extremely compact and fully modularised prime mover which allows for the major portion of erection work to be accomplished at the factory. The low weight of the heavy duty gas turbine in conjunction with the integral base allows a simplification of ships' foundations requirements. These advantages clearly illustrate the reduction of installation cost which is of benefit to the shipbuilder. The ease of automation, fast starting capability and low maintenance requirements can be translated into direct economic benefits to the owner in reducing operating costs. The ease of automation, including fully automated remote start-up and shut-down, are of direct advantage in reducing crew size requirements. This incidentally also results in reduction of first cost by reducing requirements for crew accommodations.
