In a manually shifted gear box for cars and trucks there are three transmission shafts: Input shaft, main shaft and counter shaft. All of these three parts are manufactured today by various forging techniques such as for example drop forging, hot upsetting, cold forging or by the combination of cold forging and friction welding. Recently, also wedge cross rolling has been applied to produce counter shafts. In the following sections the various production methods for these transmission shafts are introduced and the technical and economical advantages are discussed. New developments during the last years are the production of hollow shafts or the production of shafts with external splines. Also, developments for shafts with preformed teeth will be shown.
