The lay-out of main engine and propeller for containerships and tankers is a difficult task. It should be done in an early stage of the ship design, making it possible to design the engine room after the optimum propulsion plant. At this stage though, not very much is known about the ship's future trade pattern and its interaction with the propeller in heavy seas. Depending on shipowner, type of ship and intended trade routes, the lay-out is very often based on a certain power margin (sea-margin). This sea-margin can vary from 20-30%. m addition an engine speed-margin is also used as design criteria. With sufficient margins, it should be possible to run the ship fully loaded against heavy seas, with a safety margin in the ship's speed for smooth-water operation. The aim of this project is to introduce a systematic method for lay-out of main-engine and propeller considering certain criteria given from the shipowner. It will also include a view to Specific Fuel Oil Consumption (SFOC), wear-rate and maintenance costs, which should be kept as low as possible. Though the criteria will be specified in this text, the idea is that the shipowner should have full freedom in the selection of criteria to be fulfilled by the main engine and the propeller.
