Problems of increasing power are discussed for two ship types, mommoth bulk carrier or tanker and fast cargo or container ship; guidance is given from propeller designer's point of view regarding changeover from single screw to twin screw propulsion, and it is also suggested triple screws can be considered in certain cases; advantages and disadvantages of single, twin and triple screws on these two ship types, and influence of contrarotating propellers, controllable pitch propellers and other propulsion devices are taken into account.
