To improve fuel consumption and reduce the effect on the environment, a group of European automotive manufacturers is assessing the potential for using aluminium alloys for reducing the weight of mass manufactured vehicle body structures. The challenge is to design a spaceframe structure with a feasible joining technique for the extrusions. Three potential joints are being investigated: welding without an extra part, sheet fabricated and cast joints. Maximum use must also be made of the capability of extrusions to give shape and integrate other functions. Initial designs have been produced and structural analysis has indicated good collapse properties.
