Preprimed aluminum for automotive body sheet offers a number of advantages over unpainted metal in terms of: corrosion resistance, storage stability, enhanced formablity and optimized metal pretreatment and paint selection. In this paper, the selection process for a primer system is outlined and properties of the preprimed sheet material are reviewed mainly with respect to corrosion resistance and formability. Both fillform and cyclic (SCAB) corrosion tests were used to compare the performance of commercially available primers. In order to produce a more environmentally friendly product, a chrome free pretreatment and primer system was also evaluated. Formability testing of preprimed sheet on both laboratory scale equipment and on production tooling demonstrated the enhanced forming characteristics of preprimed versus uncoated materials. The effects of primer composition on surface roughness and recyclability of the preprimed sheet are also discussed.
