For a Scooter (2-wheeler), an engine which is a part of its rear suspension system, if mounted on the chassis with a rigid but light-weight link, there will be a large reduction in vibrations of the vehicle. The latter would be a function of time-variant reactive forces at the engine-mounting on a plane road. Mathematical analysis presented here seeks insight into dynamics of the link-mounting system. To minimize transfer of shaking forces to the chassis, design directions in terms of optimal combination of link angle, cylinder inclination & balance factor of the engine were sought. Sensitivity of vibratory response of the system to changes in engine-RPM, suspension/tire stiffness, link-length & other physical parameters was examined by computer simulation. Study of interactions with combustion-induced couple, road-load & tractive/braking effort on the rear wheel is made. Attempts in the direction of experimental validation are also reported.
